Canary in a Coal Mine Week 1
Questions
Pray and invite God into this time with Him.
Do you ever find yourself being quick to anger? Is it easy for things to get you riled up and upset?
Consider why you might be so quick to get angry. Is there something else going on in your life that’s causing you to lash out? What’s going on beneath your anger? What other emotions might you be feeling beneath the anger?
Read Psalms 37: 8-9.
David tells us to refrain from anger and turn from wrath as it only leads to evil. When you’re sad, sometimes it can be easier to be angry because it covers the sadness. Instead, when you feel angry, ask yourself why you feel angry and what’s really going on underneath the anger.
Spiritual Practice
Reflection: Take a deep breath and reflect on the questions you just answered. Maybe you’re even feeling angry right now. Breathe in. Breathe out. Think about what’s making you angry or things that have made you angry. Look deeper into the feeling and think about if another emotion was happening beneath the anger.
Prayer: Spend time in prayer with God. Tell Him about the times where your anger has gotten the best of you. If you struggle to see your anger or admit it’s a problem, ask Him to help you see the problem. Ask Him to help you find a sense of calm and acknowledge the issues under your anger. Pray that God would help you navigate your emotions and make you slower to anger.
